Williams: Lawmakers Planning Special Session

May 8, 2008, 12:16 PM EDT

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The leader of the state Senate says lawmakers are signing petitions to call themselves back into special session to make at least one budget fix.

Sen. Donald Williams, the Senate's president pro tem, says they want to extend an increase in a local real estate transaction tax that is set to expire next fiscal year. The tax provides cities and towns with approximately $40 million a year in revenue.

Williams says he's also open to debating an ethics reform bill, which would revoke or reduce pensions of corrupt officials and government employees. But he says an agreement first needs to be reached on that bill.

State law requires a majority of legislators to sign a petition, asking the secretary of the state to set a special legislative session within 30 days.
