Demonstration permits issued for Cheney visit

May 8, 2008, 11:23 AM EDT

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - Supporters and opponents of the war in Iraq have been granted permits to demonstrate during Vice President Dick Cheney's visit to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's commencement.

The New London city manager issued permits to the Gathering of Eagles, a group that supports President Bush's policy in Iraq, and St. Francis House, which opposes the war, to gather outside the academy's main gate.

Members of both groups were part of the 1,000 demonstrators at the academy last year when President Bush delivered the commencement address.

Cheney will speak May 21 at the graduation of 230 cadets during the academy's 127th commencement.
