Long Island Wine Country
The East Coast version of the Napa Valley
Sarah Cody,
These days travelers leave the Orient Point Harbor in Long Island and, almost immediately, enter wine country. In minutes, Route 25 becomes the East Coast's version of Napa Valley.
The Bedell Cellars brings some "Manhattan chic" to Cutchogue, a quaint village with inviting shops and old-fashioned farmstands.
According to Bedell Cellars COO Trent Preszler, Merlot is Bedell's specialty, but the vineyard is also experimenting with "blending."
The wine trail here started to take shape in the 80's, but in just the last 5 years, the industry has exploded here - and now there are about 40 vineyards clustered together along the North Fork.
And, of course, the beaches are known for soft sand, smooth stones and clear water.
The East end of Long Island is a maritime haven with a twist. The journey is a feast for the eyes, "bookended" by the biggest treat of all.
