Ferry Travels To Chapter In Maritime History

NORWALK —
The summer is drawing to a close, but there is still plenty to do without going far. From Norwalk's Hope Dock, a few steps forward take you back in time.
The forty-four passenger Seaport Islander Ferry takes visitors on a half-hour cruise through Norwalk Harbor towards the Norwalk Islands. It's a narrated tour, filled with sights and history.
"There are a lot of things out here that might not be obvious to people and we try to educate as well as entertain," says Barry Natale, captain of the Seaport Islander.
The boat docks at Sheffield Island, just yards away from the island's chief attraction, its lighthouse, which dates back to the 1800's.
The lighthouse is open for tours and is in the process of being restored. From its top, you can see for miles.
"A lot of people say that if you visit Europe, you'll see castles and America really doesn't have that, but our equivalent is lighthouses," says lighthouse keeper Jon Von Hohorn.
