Shelburne Falls
A Bridge In Full Bloom & PotHoles Bubbling With Beauty!
Ted Greenberg,
Visitors of this river valley will discover one of New England's most beautiful natural environments.Nestled in the foothills of the Berkshires, Shelburne Falls is an easy drive from New York, Hartford or Boston.
This getaway locale is also home to the famous Bridge of Flowers, a former 400-ft trolley bridge that was built in 1908 and spans the Deerfield River. In 1929, it was transformed and now is adorned with over 500 varieties of plantings. There is always something blooming!
Just down river from the Bridge of Flowers is a hydroelectric dam, which reveals below it an incredible geological find. Over 50 ancient glacial potholes some as small as 6 inches in diameter to some as large as 39 feet across dot this natural wonder.
The potholes were ground in the granite during high water of the glacial age by the whirlpool action of water and gyrating stones. The variety of shades contained in the rock make it one of the most beautiful spots in Western Massachusetts.
