For an adventure through time, take a daytrip to Old New-Gate Prison and copper mine in East Granby, Connecticut.
The celebrated Simsbury copper mine was the first American Chartered copper mine. It was later turned into part of New-Gate Prison, Connecticut's first state prison which was open from 1776-1827.Today, visit the prison's remains and then venture underground into the mine, which has a constant temperature in the mid 40's to near 50 degrees.
This national historic landmark is located on Newgate Road, off Route 20 in East Granby. It's 17 miles from Hartford and 54 miles from New Haven.
