Second Arrest In New Haven Home Invasion

May 5, 2008, 11:30 AM EDT

NEW HAVEN — A second suspect has been charged in a home invasion last week where a 55-year-old woman was beaten with a baseball bat and tied to a chair in the city's East Rock section.

Samuel Evans, 17, is scheduled for arraignment this morning in Superior Court in New Haven.

He is charged with first-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, first-degree larceny, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment and various conspiracy charges.

Police say Evans is one of multiple suspects who burglarized the Loomis Place home on April 30 and fled in the victim's car. Police arrested a 17-year-year old boy last week.

Evans was taken into custody Saturday evening.

The victim, who was housesitting, was beaten over the head. She was treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital, police said.

The New Haven attack follows home invasions in the past nine months in Cheshire and New Britain that left four people dead. The attacks prompted an intense debate at the state Capitol over stiffer penalties for hardened criminals.
