The getaway driver in a high-profile murder case who crashed into the car of an innocent woman, killing her, was sentenced Friday to 12 years behind bars, a Superior Court judge said.
Trevon Stringer, 23, of Hartford, was sentenced to a 20-year-term, suspended after 12 years and five years of probation, said Judge David Gold. Stringer pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree manslaughter in connection with the death of 24-year-old Latywania Mundle on Dec. 24, 2005.
Prosecutor Johh Fahey said Friday in Superior Court in Hartford that Stringer had been drinking, was speeding and had run a red light when Mundle's Toyota Camry was broadsided by his Jeep Cherokee at the intersection of Main and Pavilion streets in Hartford.
Stringer has said in court papers that he was forced to drive Ricardo Mack, a Hartford man, who had just shot up Papas Pizza in downtown Hartford. Mack was convicted last month of killing Chaz Booth and injuring two other men and is awaiting sentencing.
But Fahey said he doubted that Stringer drove the Jeep under duress or at gunpoint because he and Mack knew one another and a gun was in Stringer's glove compartment.
Defense Lawyer Wesley Spears said Mundle's death "was an accident. There was a shooting at Papas pizza. The shooter asked Stringer to drive him away. He offers his apologies to the family. … There was no premeditation on his part."
"I'm sorry for your loss,'' Stringer told the Mundle family.
