Most Frequent Mistakes
- Never start a story with a stand-up.
- Only do 1 stand-up in the story...in the middle or at the end.
- If a stand-up is at the end, then we need a wrap-up sentence before the reporter tags out.
- Never say "signing off". You are not "live", you are on tape.
Black the tape for 2 minutes so you have enough control track.
20 seconds into the black, INSERT EDIT. Lay down the first shot of audio/video "pad" with natural sound up full.
Then, lay down the reporter's voice over until the first interview - Audio ch. 1.
Then lay down the interview WITH INTERVIEWEE'S VIDEO- Audio ch. 1
Then lay down more of the reporter's voice over - Audio ch. 1
If there is natural sound on tape (nat sot) then lay it down with it's video - Audio Ch. 2
Then lay down more of the reporter's voice over - Audio ch. 1
Then lay down the reporter's stand-up. Take the video and the audio - Audio Ch. 1
Let the last shot of the reporter run for 5 more seconds past their last word. This is ending video/audio pad. That means the reporter must stand still for at least 10 seconds after they finish their last word.
Once all the audio tracks are laid down and they total 50 seconds, then go back and insert edit all the pictures that match the words - these are your cover shots.
Be sure that when a person being interviewed is on-camera we actually see them. That is why we want to take their audio and video when we lay down the audio track first.
From the reporter's first word to last word should be 50 seconds exactly.
There should be 5 seconds of audio/video pad at the beginning and 5 seconds of audio/video pad at the end. This is NOT counted as part of the story.
- Use a tripod ALL the time. Never shoot off the shoulder.
- Pick other stories. Everyone should not do the same story.
