March 18, 2008

School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: Stuck in the Basement
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Very good. Nice energy and pace. Nice job wrapping up the story in the stand up.

INTERVIEWS: Good people to interview. Nice selection of sound bites. Good job getting perspectives from different age groups. Framed very nicely.

ORIGINALITY: Very good.

WRITING: Good work. Stayed focused and told a good story.

VIDEO: Nice job getting a variety of shots and angles.

AUDIO: Good use of natural sound. Clear audio and consistant levels.

EDITING: Story flowed nicely.

OVERALL: Good work.

School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: Doggy Fitness
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Excellent. Good intonation and delivery.

INTERVIEWS: Good people to talk to. Great job writing into the sound bites. Sound bites seemed a little rehearsed, and not very natural sounding.

ORIGINALITY: Great.

WRITING: Very well written.

VIDEO: Well composed and varied. Well shot. The interviews were well composed. Nice job getting different angles.

AUDIO: Clear and understandable.

EDITING: Excellent editing, the pictures enhanced the story.

OVERALL: Excellent. Interesting subject matter and well told.

School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: Beyond the Amistad
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Good.

INTERVIEWS: Teacher was good to talk to. Help explain the idea of the project. Would have been good to find a more emotional sound bite from one of the students that participated. Something that really addressed the seriousness of the subject.

ORIGINALITY: Interesting story topic.

WRITING: Very heavy subject. Needed to hear how many people died. How many paper clips were needed?

VIDEO: Pretty good but always use a tripod. Some shaky shots. Nice job getting down to table level to look at paperclips. Nice movement.

AUDIO: Good levels.

EDITING: Good but could have been a little tighter. Second interview was shot too much of a profile.

OVERALL: Interesting story.

----------------

School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: Pinwheels for Peace
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Good job. Nice location for the stand up.

INTERVIEWS: Good people to talk to but the sound bites really didn't advance the story. Would have been good opportunity to explain how this project benefits world peace. Is it just to get people thinking about it or engaging in conversations about peace? If so have one of your sound bites say that.

ORIGINALITY: Good idea.

WRITING: Need to work on telling story. How do the pinwheels help? Is it just getting the students to think about world peace or are they being sold to benefit something? Help the viewer understand the purpose of the project.

VIDEO: Good job getting different angels. Great job getting on the ground to get to pinwheel level. Very good shots. Good composition. Movement should be from some place to another place. For example if you started zoomed in on one pinwheel and then zoomed out to show the whole lawn covered with them. The camera was a bit too active for a news story.

AUDIO: Good.

EDITING: Good.

OVERALL: We like parts of this but there are weak parts. This could be an award contender if you focus the writing to tell the story better. Needs to be told to people outside of school who don't know anything about this project. Work on the story telling and this could probably fit in the youth leadership category as a nominee.

Date: March 13, 2007
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: "Clean Off Your Car"
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Good energy. Nice job on the stand up. Clear and easy to understand. Good location for the stand up.

INTERVIEWS: Good choices. Work on getting stronger lifts. The police officer would have been more effective if he had talked about the accidents he has seen. Sound bites are a great place to add emotion to the story.

ORIGINALITY: Very good story choice.

WRITING: Very good. Good opening. What is the law? Do they actually give out tickets for not cleaning off your car?

VIDEO: Good. The interview had too much profile. The reporter should be standing right next to the camera so the person being interviewed is forced to look in the right direction. Very good composition on the stand up shot.

AUDIO: Good job. Good natural sound

EDITING: Nice job matching the video to the audio. No pad at the beginning. There should be 5 seconds of B-roll before the story starts.

OVERALL: Good job!

Date: January 15, 2007
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Sleeping in a Box"
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Very good. Nice pace and clear.

INTERVIEWS: Good choices and great sound bites. The second interview was very informative.

ORIGINALITY: Good story!

WRITING: Nice job covering all the questions. Watch your choice of words at the end of the story, you say "fun and exciting," but you are talking about kids sleeping out in the cold and raising awareness of homelessness. It isn't really fun or exciting.

VIDEO: Good shots but way too much movement. Always use a tripod! More close ups and shots of kids in the boxes would really add to the story. Watch out for the arm in the interview. It is very distracting. Zoom in so that you can't see the mic or only see the mic and not the whole arm.

AUDIO: No major problems.

EDITING: More B-roll will help with overall editing of the story.

OVERALL: Nice job.

Date: January 15, 2007
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: "Mix It Up Lunch"
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Great job. Clear and easy to understand.

INTERVIEWS: Great choices. Excellent bites.

ORIGINALITY: Interesting story idea.

WRITING: Very good. You covered the essentials and made it a national story by explaining that this has been done throughout the country. Be careful of leading into your story with a question.

VIDEO: Make sure to shoot enough video. You used the same shot of the lunchroom twice and that is way too much for a 50 second story. Add some interaction shots. You need also need to add close up shots. Some shots could include shaking hands, students showing each other ipods or phones, show them participating in the interaction with new people. You need more b-roll. Be aware of the natural light in the shots. The lighting was very bright on the opening shot it seemed out of place with the rest of the story.

AUDIO: Good. Nice job with the ambient sound.

EDITING: Good job but more B-roll will really help this story.

OVERALL: Good job!

2005-2006 Evaluations

Date: April 21, 2006
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: "Hoops for Hearts"
Status: Broadcast
Length: 49

DELIVERY: Great job. Nice pace and clear tone. Good stand up. Very energetic.

INTERVIEWS: Excellent. Good choices and nice sound bites. Very effective. They really added to the story.

ORIGINALITY: Good community event story.

WRITING: Great job. Nice job covering all the questions and making the story interesting. The writing flowed nicely. Great opening line. Caught our attention right away. Nice job incorporating the facts and telling us how much money was raised.

VIDEO: Great action shots. Felt like we were right at the game. Next time think about adding some tight shots and a shot of the crowd. Keep the arm out of the interview shot. Framing the interview tighter will keep the arm out of view.

AUDIO: Good job using a microphone. Nice use of natural sound. It added to the feel of the story.

EDITING: Very good. Lots of B-roll. Nice flow and good mix of shots. Nice pace.

OVERALL: Great job! Nice story.

-------------------

Date: March 7, 2006
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: "Good Morning SIS"
Status: Broadcast
Length: :49

DELIVERY: Good pace. Nice job telling the story.

INTERVIEWS: Great location for your interviews. Good choices for interviewees and nice sound bites.

ORIGINALITY: Good.

WRITING: Good job. Covered all the questions.

VIDEO: Remember to use a light when shooting inside. First interview was very dark. Always use a tripod. The video at the beginning was shaky. Great shots of the studio and on the air. Even more B-roll could have been used.

AUDIO: No problems. It would have been great to have some natural sound in the story. Hearing the producer countdown or hearing the anchors saying good morning would have really added to the story.

EDITING: Good. More B-roll would have made the editing even stronger.

OVERALL: Very nice job. Just think about our suggestions for your next story.

2004-2005 Evaluations

Date: January 26, 2005
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: "Walk for a Cause"
Status: Broadcast
Length: :47

DELIVERY:

INTERVIEWS:

ORIGINALITY:

WRITING:

VIDEO:

AUDIO:

EDITING:

OVERALL: Nice job re-editing to shorten the story and taking out the pauses. The piece now runs a bit short, but since you have the :5 seconds of padding at the beginning and end with so we will be able to use this to make it :50 seconds. In the future please try to get as close as possible to :50 seconds from the start of the voiceover to the end. Great story and great job taking the time to fix the piece so it gets on the air.

---------

Date: December 14, 2004
School: Shelton Intermediate School
Town: Shelton
Slug: "Walk for a Cause"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :50.38

DELIVERY: Good pace. Nice delivery.

INTERVIEWS: Good interviews. They added important facts to the story.

ORIGINALITY: Interesting story.

WRITING: Nice job getting all your facts in. You covered who, what, where, when, why, and how. Great job writing into the interviews!

VIDEO: Remember to use your tripod. There were a few shaky shots. Nice shots of the groups of walkers.

AUDIO: Good levels.

EDITING: There are long, awkward pauses after both interviews. Be careful not to leave these long pauses in your story. When you edit these pauses out, your story should be the appropriate length.

OVERALL: Nice job. We really liked this story, but it has to be :50 seconds in length. We don't have the capabilities of editing a second off your piece so we will have to defer the story back to you. We need this to be exactly :50 seconds from beginning of the voice-over to the end of the stand-up. If we go a second over schedule the advertisers don't like it!
