DELIVERY: Great job. Easy to follow.

INTERVIEWS: We didn't hear any of the interview. We saw the principal but didn't hear him. Please include some of his interview as a sound bite. Another good choice for an interview would have been one of the performers.

ORIGINALITY: Very interesting.

WRITING: Very good. Nice set up. Good job covering a lot of facts. Remember to include a sound bite from your interview.

VIDEO: Good shots of the performance. Some shots of the audience watching would have added to the story. Also some more close ups would add a nice variety.

AUDIO: Great job using natural sound. It was just the right level. Loud enough to hear but not so loud that it distracted from the voiceover.

EDITING: Don't use dissolves, wipes or pushes. News stories generally use straight cuts in editing.

OVERALL: Very good story. Please take out the dissolves, wipes and/or pushes. Also, it would really add to the story if you add a sound bite from the principal's interview. Please work on these suggestions and re-submit so we can get this on the air.

DELIVERY (How is the voice used to tell the story [pitch, tone, diction]): Good job on voice-over. Good job placing your stand-up on location. Nice close framing on stand-up.

INTERVIEWS (Sound bites interesting and did they enhance the story?): Good first interview

ORIGINALITY (Story creative, unique, statewide appeal?): Good

WRITING (Report written clearly, creatively, & grammatically correct?): Good job on opening segment. When writing your script remember to answer the all important journalistic questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. The "When" was not answered. This was a missed opportunity to mention this was an open day for school children. If I'm not mistaken tickets are offered free to area schools for certain shows when the circus is in town. I would have to double check that fact.

VIDEO (Pix illustrated the story? Tri-pod used, lighting, composition?): Good job getting a variation of images. Try to keep your camera as steady as possible with little to no pans, tilts, pulls and zooms.

AUDIO (Clarity, natural sound, enhance the story?): Overall this was good. Be careful when recording and mixing your sound, the voice-over falls off before the end of the sentence when introducing the first interview.

EDITING(Pictures and sound used in the proper sequence to tell a story? Pictures match the script?): There are a couple of jump cuts in your piece. Never show the same subject in two consecutive images – try to insert a different angle (close-up, etc) between the images.

OVERALL(All the elements used to tell an interesting story for the viewer?): Student News is considered Public Service by FCC regulations and therefore we have to be very careful not to air stories that can be construed as a commercial for a For-Profit company. The script needs a once over incorporating a community message. A suggestion: what made that day extra special to all those kids seeing the circus, many for the first time? The same images can be used as you are still referencing the circus.

DELIVERY: Good voice-over.

INTERVIEWS: You should try to obtain 2 interviews to support your story.

ORIGINALITY: When considering a concept ask yourself "what is the story, and why would the general public in Connecticut care to wait up until 11:00pm. to watch my news report?" Once you have answered this question you have the "hook" of the story. Then answer the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.

WRITING: See note under originality. Currently, your piece is well shot but the concept is more of a documentary then a news story.

VIDEO: Good

AUDIO: Overall good. Be careful when mixing the audio that the natural sound does not overpower the voice-over and interviews.
