Old Saybrook High School
Date posted: March 26, 2004
School: Old Saybrook High School
Town: Old Saybrook
Slug: The American Turtle
Status: Re-submit
Length: :52

DELIVERY: Good delivery on your voice-over and stand-up. You had a nice ending stand-up on location with a good wrap-up. Please give your SIG-out on camera with just one reporter. In other words, the girl who is on camera giving the wrap up ends with "In Old Saybrook, this is _____ reporting." The other reporter will have a chance to be on-camera and recognized in the next story you do. INTERVIEWS: Good choices. ORIGINALITY: Good, interesting story.

WRITING: Good job writing into your first interview sound bite. How about introducing your second interview?

VIDEO: Overall well done. Try to keep your camera steady on your shots. Tri-pod at all times, no panning. Good job getting close-up and medium shots.

AUDIO: Good job getting nat sound at the beginning of your piece. There are two places where there is no sound IE: voice-over or nat sound. You need to be careful with this, a viewer might believe something is wrong with the television if they hear nothing at all.

EDITING: Overall this is okay. Be careful to match the images with the script. You have a shot of a photo of the original submarine without an explanation to correspond.

OVERALL: The story needs to be exactly :50 seconds from the moment the voice-over begins to the end of the stand-up. Currently we have it timed at almost :52 seconds. Please re-edit for the required time. This is a good story and deserves a chance to be aired, we suggest you give it one more time in editing. Also, as a professional courtesy, please rewind the tape and cue up before submitting.

Evaluations for 2002-2003

Date:7/3/03
School: Old Saybrook High School

Status: Re-submit
Length: :51

DELIVERY (How is the voice used to tell the story [pitch, tone, diction]): Good job on delivery. Good job putting your stand-up on location.

INTERVIEWS (Sound bites interesting and did they enhance the story?): Good 1st interview. Suggestion for 2nd – a coach?

ORIGINALITY (Story creative, unique, statewide appeal?): Good

WRITING (Report written clearly, creatively, & grammatically correct?): Well done.

VIDEO (Pix illustrated the story? Tri-pod used, lighting, composition?): More b-roll is needed. Currently you only have establishing wide angle shots. Please make sure to get plenty of medium and close-ups when shooting. This will help you in the editing and pacing of your story.

AUDIO (Clarity, natural sound, enhance the story?): Please use a hand-held mic on interviews and stand-ups. Don't rely on the camera mic.

EDITING(Pictures and sound used in the proper sequence to tell a story? Pictures match the script?): See video note.

OVERALL(All the elements used to tell an interesting story for the viewer?):

Length: :51

DELIVERY: Good delivery and stand-up.

INTERVIEWS: A second interview with a kindergarten teacher. IE: have expectations for kindergartens changed in the aftermath of state testing requirements? Does this put pressure on the students and teachers to perform at a higher level?

ORIGINALITY: What is the focus or "hook" of your story.

WRITING: Once you have your "hook" of the story, answer the 5W's and H; Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.

VIDEO: Use a tri-pod at all times. Nice job getting images of the students and matching to your script.

AUDIO: Be careful your nat sound doesn't over power your script.

EDITING: Please don't leave holes in your script. The images of the kids eating lunch should be seen with nat sound laid under the voice-over.

INTERVIEWS:

ORIGINALITY: When deciding on a news story, ask yourself "what makes your story unique"? All high schools have a musical production, what is unique about Old Saybrooks?? Keep in mind the Student News stories are aired and viewed by the entire state, all ages.

WRITING:

VIDEO: Please use a tri-pod at all times. No hand held camera shots should be used. Many of your images are too dark to view. Once they are dubbed one more generation down to put on-air they will be almost black.

DELIVERY: Try to slow down just a bit.

INTERVIEWS: Two interviews would have been great. One from a visiting student, one from a student at the school is learning from the visiting students. Each interviews sound bite used should add information to the story and move it forward.

ORIGINALITY: Good premise.

WRITING: Remember to always answer the 5 W's and H; Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. There should not be breaks in your voice-over for long periods of time. The voice-over should flow between your sound bites (interviews).

VIDEO: Please use a tri-pod at all times!! Also, no pans, tilts or zooms in a news story.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: See writing note.

Status: Re-submit
Length: :47

DELIVERY: Good voice-over delivery. The only time the reporter needs to be on-camera is for the wrap-up stand-up at the end of the story. Also, this is not a "live" story, please don't use "I'm here today…." In your script.

INTERVIEWS: A second interview is always a good idea.

ORIGINALITY: What is the focus or "hook" of your story?

WRITING: Once you have the focus of your story, then be sure to answer the all important 5W's and H: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.

VIDEO: TRI-POD at all times!!!! Please don't use pans, tilts and zooms in a news story. Make sure to get plenty of medium and close-ups in your footage, this will help when you are editing. Also, sports such as you where trying to achieve are usually done with specialty high speed camera's design for sports footage. It would be best to stick to straight images to tell your story.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: See video

School: Old Saybrook High School

Slug: "Disney Trip"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :51

DELIVERY: Good delivery. The SIG-Out is best at the end of your story as a wrap-up.

INTERVIEWS: Good 1st choice. How about an interview with one of the students from the band who went on the trip.

ORIGINALITY: Good

WRITING: Overall good. Note: please see page 12 of the "How to Manual" enclosed, for tips on how to write into and out of sound bites.

VIDEO: More b-roll is needed. IE: more images of the band practicing and at Disney. The footage of Disney without the band is only needed in your establishing footage.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: See video note.

OVERALL: Over all this was well done – it needs one more trip to editing.
