School: Norwich Free Academy
Town: Norwich
Slug: NFA's Hero
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Great job.
INTERVIEWS: Excellent sound bites. Great speaker. Good decision to keep sound bites to the person the story was about.
ORIGINALITY: Very good.
WRITING: Very good. Nice job starting with a strong sound bite. It really worked!
VIDEO: Good camera work. Nice job using stills and keeping the shots steady. Be careful using the map from an internet site. This is copyright of the internet site. A better shot would be a picture of the family in Detroit. We are assuming that all photos were the subject's personal photos that he gave NFA permission to broadcast. Make sure that no pictures pulled from the internet or books are used in Student News stories.
AUDIO: Good.
EDITING: Flowed nicely. Good job visualizing a story that could have been hard too.
OVERALL: Nice work.

School: Norwich Free Academy
Town: Norwich
Slug: Body Image
Status: Re-Submit
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Nice job. Good use of information in the stand up.
INTERVIEWS: Good choices of people to interview, but it would have been good to add balance to the story with a sound bite from someone from an advertising association giving an opposing point of view.
ORIGINALITY: Interesting story idea.
WRITING: Common beliefs were stated as facts through out the story. Don't editorialize. Make sure that you attribute statements and don't just present them as facts if they are not. The writing needs balance.
VIDEO: The shots of the magazines were ok, but it would have much better if they was a wide shot of a whole magazine rack. We cannot air this story with out written permission from the studio to use the copyrighted material from "Devil Wears Prada."
AUDIO: Good.
EDITING: Some tight shots would have added to the story. A close up of some healthy foods would have been good when mentioned.
OVERALL: There was no B-roll pad at the beginning or end of the story. It makes it very difficult on our producers in post-production. Please add pad, work on the writing and submit written permission to broadcast the copyrighted material from "Devil Wears Prada".

Slug: Reaching Out
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Good job. Clear and easy to understand.
INTERVIEWS: Good choices of people to interview. Good sound bites. Nice job using the lifts to add emotion to the story. Work on the camera angle for the interviews. They were too much of a profile. The reporter should be standing just to the side of the photographer so the interview subject is forced to look toward the camera.
ORIGINALITY: Very good story idea.
WRITING: Well written. Story flowed well and was easy to follow.
VIDEO: Nice location and composition on the stand up shot. Watch the color balance. There was one shot that looked blue. Be careful with the camera moves. The story starts with a zoom that doesn't go anywhere. You could have started with a tight shot of the sign and then gone out to a wide shot of the building. Also, there is a pan of empty chairs. A pan should start at a specific place and end at something related. It needs to have a specific purpose. Most action happens in the frame not with camera moves.
AUDIO: Good levels. Nice job having everyone on mic. Sounded great.
EDITING: It would have been great to show a tight shot of food being served, some one eating, or a bag with food to go out, when it was being talked about.
OVERALL: Good job!

Date Posted: March 9, 2007
School: Norwich Free Academy
Town: Norwich
Slug: Reading Buddies
Status: Re-Submit
Length: 43
DELIVERY: It was difficult to understand. Work on a crisp delivery.
INTERVIEWS: Good choices. Good sound bite from the student. The information from the teacher was good, but could have been used in the voiceover. A lift about why the program is needed, or what kids gain by participating, would make the story stronger. Look for a better location for the stand up. In front of a bookcase or kids area would better suite the story.
ORIGINALITY: Good.
WRITING: The story was out of order. The information in the stand up was good, but should have been at the top of the story. It helps set the story up and gives the viewer a reason to care about the program. With that change the writing would be good.
VIDEO: The story was about a program where students read to kids, but it was never shown. There were no kids shown in the story at all. The only video was from the training program. The video was well lit. You should either get the video to support the story about the reading program, or write to the video you have and focus on the training.
AUDIO: Very difficult to hear sound bite. Always use a microphone. The stand up was shot in the same location as the interviews but had good audio because you used a mic.
EDITING: More B-roll and tight shots would have improved the overall editing. A tight shot of a book would have been a good addition. There was no pad on the end of the story and not enough on the beginning.
OVERALL: The story was too short. Even using pad from the beginning you are still very short. It should be 50 seconds. Either re-shot to get video to go along with the story, or re-write to the video you have. If you had focused this story on one person in particular you could have made this a Trantolo & Trantolo story.

Date Posted: March 7, 2007
School: Norwich Free Academy
Town: Norwich
Slug: Tommy's Toy Fund Run
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Ok, but the end was very rushed. The pace of the stand up didn't go along with the rest of the voiceover.
INTERVIEWS: The sound bite really didn't add to the story. It would have been great to hear from a child or parent who is receiving toys, or one of the people participating talking about how these toys make a difference. This is a great place to add emotion to the story.
ORIGINALITY: Good story choice.
WRITING: Ok. Work on focusing your story. There are a lot of different angles to this story but only enough time to really focus on one thing. Your interview was with the coordinator but then you were discussing the track teams involvement. It would have made more sense to get a sound bite from a track team member to go along with the flow of the story.
VIDEO: The shots were very crooked. The camera must not have been level when most of the B-roll was shot. The stand up was too dark. The story needed tight shots such as a person handing off a donation, walkers' feet, or the jingle bells.
AUDIO: The levels were fine, but a perfect opportunity to use natural sound would have been during the shot of Santa shaking the jingle bells.
EDITING: The story was about toy donations but we don't even see any toys until after the second time it is mentioned. Try to match up the video and audio. Think about the shots you will need to tell the story ahead of time. If you don't have the footage you need then write for the video you do have.
OVERALL: Good job picking a newsworthy story. Work on focusing your writing and then matching up the video so that the story flows better. Also, work on videography.

Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Great job.
INTERVIEWS: Great sound bites. They added emotion and really strengthened the story!
ORIGINALITY: Excellent! Great job finding a focus and reason to do a story. Very newsworthy.
WRITING: Excellent. This was very well written. Great organization and flow to the story. Great intro and wrap up.
VIDEO: Nice job using stills to add to the story. Good angle for the interview and stand up. There was a jump cut during one of the sound bites. Cover that with stills or b-roll. Also, there was a shot of a still that was pulsing in the middle of the story. The video level might have been too high. It would be better to use a different shot if that can't be corrected.
AUDIO: Very good. Reporter and interviewee were both on mic. Good levels.
EDITING: Good flow. There was no pad on this story. You need to have 5 seconds of b-roll before and after your story. We need this for post-production to format the story for broadcast. We will try to format this without pad but if it is not possible we may need it re-submitted.
OVERALL: Great story! With the corrections of the jump cut and the pulsing still shot this story could be considered for the Fox 61 Outstanding Achievement category. If you re-submit please add pad.

Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Nice job.
INTERVIEWS: Good choices of people to interview. Nice sound bites.
ORIGINALITY: Great story choice. Interesting that the school is being proactive and addressing the changing dynamics of their population. Newsworthy topic.
WRITING: You started out the story saying, "panels like these…," but you never told us what the panel was or who it was made up of. Don't use acronyms. People outside of your town don't know what NFA stands for. You should say Norwich Free Academy for the first mention and then you can use NFA on subsequent mentions.
VIDEO: Good, but be aware of the angle of your interviews. They were too much of a profile. The interviewee should be looking just off camera.
AUDIO: Good.
EDITING: You need to have 5 seconds of b-roll pad at the beginning and end of the story. The pad is used in post-production to format for broadcast. We will try to get this ready for air, but if it is not possible because of the lack of pad we'll have to have it resent.
OVERALL: Great story idea. Good job with your video and audio, but work on the organization of the writing for next time to make the story easier to follow.

Slug: No Child Left Behind / Opt Out
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50
DELIVERY: Nice delivery.
INTERVIEWS: Great sound bites. Great job using interviews to show both sides and give the story balance.
ORIGINALITY: Excellent choice of topic.
WRITING: Good job writing a balanced story. It was a complex story and for someone not familiar with the topic it would be confusing. Work on organization in your writing to help tell the story. Military recruiters had access to students before the No Child Left Behind Act. What was the difference between now and before the act? Was it not a requirement before and schools volunteered this information? Is NFA the only school allowing students to opt out or is this an option for all students? People outside of your town don't know what NFA stands for. You should say Norwich Free Academy for the first mention and then you can use NFA on subsequent mentions.
VIDEO: Crisp clear video.
AUDIO: Good levels.
EDITING: The form that was shown at the end as an opt out form seemed to be the same for as the one being filled out at the beginning of the story when the v/o is talking about the information being given out. It was not clear if the students at the start of the story were giving their information to recruiters or if they were opting out. You need to have 5 seconds of b-roll pad at the beginning and end of the story. The pad is used in post-production to format for broadcast. We will try to get this ready for air, but if it is not possible because of the lack of pad we'll have to have it resent.
OVERALL: Good job finding a very newsworthy topic. It is an ambitious story. Remember that you need to be able to tell the story to someone without prior knowledge of the subject. It is difficult explain a complex topic in 50 seconds but working on the organization of the storytelling will help with the overall understanding

AUDIO: There was a hiss through out the entire story.
EDITING: Very good. Use all straight cuts. The single dissolve was not necessary. It looked out of place.

Status: Re-Submit
Length: 48.91
DELIVERY: Good pace and clearly spoken
INTERVIEWS: Good interviews. Great sound bite from the student. You might want to pick a different clip from the parent or introduce it differently. It sounds a bit repetitive. Both interviews were negative toward teen gambling. In order to show both sides of the story it would have been good to get an other interview with a teen who gambles and tell why it's appealing.
ORIGINALITY: Good topic. Gambling is a growing trend and definitely newsworthy.
WRITING: Make sure to stay objective when reporting on a news story. You have to tell both sides of the story. Also, be careful not to give your own opinions. Don't say that casinos have something to do with the rise in teen gambling because you don't have the facts saying that it does. If it is a parent's opinion, say so by starting off with "Some Connecticut parents think….". When you say media, peer pressure and two casinos have contributed to teen gambling, what is your source? Make it clear who's opinion that is. News should be neutral. Good job quoting some stats and giving the source. The story would be more effective if you pick a clear topic. You talk about teen gambling and the effects of being near two large casinos, media, and peer pressure. It seems that the main topic is teen gambling, but the tie in with the casinos makes it a bit unclear since teens are not old enough to go to casinos. A stronger tie may be the link with media.
VIDEO: There are a lot of shots that don't seem to tie in with the story that well. All the casino shots seem out of place when you are discussing teens who are too young to go to the casinos. Some of the outdoor shots are not recognizable. After viewing the story a few times we realized it was footage of the casino parking lot and entrances, but for the average viewer they most likely won't know what the footage is of unless you mention it. Footage of teens gambling would really add to the story. The statistic graphic was a bit hard to read, maybe a different color type would make it easier to see.
AUDIO: It was hard to hear over the natural sound at points. Only use natural sound if it adds to the story.
EDITING: This will come together once you work on the writing.
OVERALL: Re-write your story with a clear focus of teen gambling. Try to find footage to support the writing. When you are re-writing make sure to show both sides of the story and stay objective.

INTERVIEWS: Good interviews. Great choices for interviewees. Good job writing into the interviews and introducing the interviewees.
ORIGINALITY: Interesting subject. Timely and relevant.
WRITING: Good job with your writing. Great job covering who, what, where, when, why and how. Well written and insightful.
VIDEO: Good shots. Great color and clarity outside. Shows you were right in the action. Remember when doing your interviews that you want your interviewee to be almost looking at the camera. Your first interview was great, but in the second interview the shot seemed that you needed to move the camera to the right to avoid having the subject looking too far away from the camera. Also, there seems to be a small glitch in the video at the beginning of the story.
AUDIO: Good, except for when you used dissolves. The stand-up was cut off at the beginning and the 3rd interview was clipped at the end.
EDITING: Your dissolves are actually more distracting rather than helpful. You get audio from the previous shot and you cut off the audio from your next shot. Dissolves are not used in news stories.
OVERALL: Nice job overall. Good footage and writing. Really good story idea. You need to add 5 seconds of pad at the beginning and end of the story. Right now the story is too short. We need the story to be 50 seconds from the beginning of the voice-over to the end of the voice-over. Re-edit to resolve the video and audio problems and remove the dissolves. Re-submit at the required 50 seconds in length.

INTERVIEWS: Good interview, but it ran a little long. You could use some of the information from the interview and write it into your voiceover. It really would have added to the story if you had an interview from a student who is in the program.
ORIGINALITY: Good.
WRITING: Good, but we would have like to hear more about why. Are these kids who excel in art? Most kids don't want to go to class during the week, what is getting these kids there on the weekend? There must be some reason these kids are willing to go an extra day of school on Saturday. Relate this to other schools or programs. Is this the only thing like it in the state or your area? Is it open only to students of NFA or can other people attend?
VIDEO: Excellent shots!
AUDIO: Good levels.
EDITING: Well edited.

ORIGINALITY: Interesting story.
WRITING: Nice job covering the facts of your story.
VIDEO: More variation in your images. The close-up images of the two types of lungs is great. Remember that you have only 50 seconds to tell a story, every image should support your script.
AUDIO:
EDITING:
OVERALL: There were no pads on this story!! We need :5 seconds of images/nat sound at both the beginning and end of each story. This allows our post production to put the Fox 61 & WB 20 wrappers on. We will give it a try, but may need to revised the "broadcast" status. Also, there is not need to mention "For Fox 61 Student News" in your ending stand-up. We suggest wrapping up your story with "from ---location---, this is ----name--- reporting." This will save valuable seconds you need for your story and help us with the wrappers we put on. Thanks.
