School: New Britain High School
Slug: New Britain's Industrial Past
Status: Broadcast
Town: New Britain
Length: 49.22
DELIVERY: Pretty good, but reporter could have spoken a bit faster.
INTERVIEWS: Good choice. Next time try a tighter shot. He seemed so far away. It would have been great to hear from a visitor of the museum too.
ORIGINALITY: Interesting story.
WRITING: Well-written. Good job telling us what type of museum it is and how it ties in to New Britain's history. Is this a new museum, or has it been in New Britain for a long time? Have they recently added a new exhibit? You might want to reconsider your closing. It seemed to end a bit abruptly.
VIDEO: Good footage of different items. Lots of great shots.
AUDIO: Good.
EDITING: Good job editing.
OVERALL: Nice work. Remember to add any important facts that would add to the news value of the story, such as if it is a new exhibit, new museum, ect.

School: New Britain High School
Slug: New Britain High-Tech Security
Status: Broadcast
Town: New Britain
Length: 49.53
DELIVERY: Very good. Clever stand-up. It was great. It would have been great if you had not zoomed out.
INTERVIEWS: Great interview. Really added to the story. Good sound bite. We really would have like to hear from a student or parent with an opposing view. A story should have balance by ensuring that you have both sides of an issue. The other side of this issue would be those who feel this type of surveillance is an invasion of privacy.
ORIGINALITY: Timely and interesting.
WRITING: Good. You told us how the security system works and added some important facts with the interview. Remember to address why. Why does the school feel such tight security is necessary? Where there recent incidents that prompted this? Is this security system newly implemented?
VIDEO: Great shots! Lots of variety. Loved how you showed the monitors in action. Good job getting shots from inside the security room and directly in the halls.
AUDIO: Good levels throughout. The ambient sound at the beginning (people talking in the background) wasn't necessary.
EDITING: Good job. Your video and audio matched up great.
OVERALL: Good work, but remember that a news story needs to be balanced. This type of security is always controversial, so be sure to show both sides of the issue. A short sound bite from with an opposing opinion would really add to the story. Be sure to answer why the school implemented the system. Why is an essential part of any news story.

DELIVERY: A little slow at times. Nice job dressing up. Nice stand up.
INTERVIEWS: Good interview. He clearly explained the process.
ORIGINALITY:
WRITING: Good job talking about coffee and how it is made, but why is this news? Are they the largest producer of coffee in New England? Is it a new business that has brought a lot of new jobs the town? Why did you choose to report on this? Why report on this now? What makes it newsworthy? When considering a story idea, ask yourself why should someone be interested in the story. It's a question the newsroom asks themselves everyday when considering which stories to cover; "why should I care?" Harsh, but true. Try to find the focus of the story and write to it.
VIDEO: Great shots.
AUDIO: Good.
EDITING: Audio and video matched up very nicely.
OVERALL: You could have a good story here. You have a lot of good footage and no problems with your audio or video. You have a lot of good footage and no problems with your audio or video. Dig deeper and find the hook. What makes this company so unique? You have some good elements but no real focus. The timing needs to be :50 seconds from the beginning of the voice-over to the end of the voice-over. When you add more information you should get closer to :50 seconds.

DELIVERY: Good pace. Clear delivery.
INTERVIEWS: Good choices for people to interview. It also would have been good to hear from a student benefiting from the program. They did run a little long. You could have taken some of the information they gave you and wrote it into the voiceover, and then selected shorter sound bites. You don't want the interviews to tell the whole story.
ORIGINALITY: Great story idea. Newsworthy topic.
WRITING: Nice job covering most of the questions, but remember you have to answer why. Why did New Britain High decide to implement this program? Do a large percentage of students not receive regular dental care? Is this the only way some will get dental care?
VIDEO: Good footage of the school and dentist office. We would have liked to see more shots during the second interview. On the second interview, you could use some B-roll after the person being interviewed is established. That way we aren't looking at the same shot for so long. Also, you might want to use a light inside. The second interview was dark.
AUDIO: Good levels.
EDITING: Good.
OVERALL: Newsworthy story. Good work, but remember to select short meaningful sound bites. Other information that you get from the interviews can be written into the voiceover. Also, remember to always cover who, what, where, when, why and how. You did a great job covering most of the questions, but you didn't cover why.

DELIVERY (How is the voice used to tell the story [pitch, tone, diction]): Good delivery on your voice over. Nice job doing your stand-up on location.
INTERVIEWS (Sound bites interesting and did they enhance the story?): Good choices for your interviews and sound bites used.
ORIGINALITY (Story creative, unique, statewide appeal?): Interesting story idea.
WRITING (Report written clearly, creatively, & grammatically correct?): Good job getting your facts in regarding Life Star. Suggestion: when writing into your sound bites you will want to give information as well as the interviews name. Question: on average how many runs per year does Life Star make?
VIDEO (Pix illustrated the story? Tri-pod used, lighting, composition?): Great b-roll obtained on life star. Nice job getting plenty of images to support your script.
AUDIO (Clarity, natural sound, enhance the story?): Nice job using nat sound throughout your story. Good consistent levels.
EDITING(Pictures and sound used in the proper sequence to tell a story? Pictures match the script?): Good job matching your images to your script and laying down nat sound throughout. Suggestion: tightening up the story at the end right before you wrap up the story you have several frames with nat sound only, no voiceover. Your story is running a few frames over the required :50 seconds and could have been tightened at this point.
OVERALL(All the elements used to tell an interesting story for the viewer?): Nice job putting your elements together.

INTERVIEWS: interesting information is added through your sound bite – nice job.
ORIGINALITY: Good
WRITING: The focus of the story should be on the product "Rapid Access Portal System" and not on the company. Your script needs to be revised one more time to answer the 5 W's and H on the product that is unique. What exactly is the Rapid Access Portal System and how does it work?
VIDEO: Nice job getting b-roll to support your story. Suggestion: the reporter is not the story and therefore you could replace the image of the reporting listening to the CEO and replace with close-up images of the "Rapid Access Portal System".
AUDIO: Good consistent levels.
EDITING: Please see video note. Otherwise, nice job editing your elements together.
OVERALL This is very interesting technology and we would love to hear more about it. Currently, the story reads a little like an infomercial for the company. Please re-due your voice over script to focus on the product (ie: technology) now available. Your re-submitted story will be eligible for the 2005 Award Ceremony. Thank you.

DELIVERY: The voice-over and stand-up should be done in as natural voice as possible. In a 50 second story, only one stand-up is really necessary. The wrap-up and SIG-out would be sufficient.
INTERVIEWS: Please introduce your sound bites – especially if it's more then a word or two.
ORIGINALITY: This was a fun/quirky story – good job.
WRITING:
VIDEO: Please use your tri-pod at all times. The footage of the reporter asking the cook for the recipe comes off as contrived. Remember you are producing for network news and not the food channel, no footage can appear staged.
AUDIO: good
