Killingly High School
Date posted: 12/11/03
School: Killingly High School
Town: Danielson
Slug: "Creamery Brook Bisson Farm"
Status: Broadcast
Length: :50

DELIVERY: Voice over delivery – Good. Good job placing yourself in the midst of your story for your ending stand-up.

INTERVIEWS: Good selection of interview subjects and sound bites used. Side note: your first sound bite is long enough to warrant an introduction in your script.

ORIGINALITY: Good interesting story with statewide appeal.

WRITING: Good

VIDEO: Good variation in your images. Remember to have the tripod at all times. IE: the image of the Bison population sign.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: Overall this was fine. One point: at the end of your stand-up you are holding (then tasting) a buffalo burger, but it's never mentioned in your script. For all those viewers who don't know that you can buy bison burgers, this might be confusing.

OVERALL: Well done story.

Evaluations for 2002-2003

Town: Killingly
Slug: "Job Shadow"
Status: Re-Submit
Length: :55

DELIVERY:

INTERVIEWS: Although you have wonderful interviews – you only have :50 seconds to tell your story. Choose 2-3 key sound bites to use (interviews) and work with those. IE: mentor and student. Introduce each of your interviews in your script by writing into and out of each sound bite.

ORIGINALITY: Good

WRITING: see interview.

VIDEO: Be careful with lighting on your inside shots. Also more b-roll would be beneficial in editing your story.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: Be careful to edit your images to your script.

OVERALL: Unfortunately, your story is :55 seconds in length. The stories need to be :50 seconds from the beginning of the voice-over to the end of the stand-up. All schools where notified of the new length at the beginning of the school year. We have had to standardize the timing and the stand-ups in-order to broadcast on both Fox 61 and WB 20. I've enclosed a current "How to" manual for your use. Please feel free to call with any questions you have.

INTERVIEWS: Nice Sound bite choices for your interviews. Suggestion: an interview with DEP.

ORIGINALITY: Good story with statewide appeal.

WRITING: Good job writing into the sound bites.

VIDEO: Good job on b-roll.

AUDIO: Nice consistent levels.

EDITING: see note

OVERALL: Overall this was a well done story. One note for Student News purposes we need the story to be exactly :55 seconds from the beginning of the voice-over to the end of the voice-over/stand-up WITH and additional :5-:10 seconds pad at both ends. Our post production crew will try to post the story at it's current length. Thanks.

Slug: "Vanilla Coke"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :55

DELIVERY: Slow down in your delivery. Try smiling throughout your voice-over recording – this will help with the pacing without taking away from the energy of the piece. Nice creative stand-up.

INTERVIEWS: Good choices for your interviews. Note: don't edit in your question right before the soundbite. You already cover the general question that will be covered in your script, the audience is waiting for the interviews thoughts – not the question.

ORIGINALITY: Nice job going into the community for your story

WRITING: Good job writing into your soundbites.

VIDEO: Nice job on your b-roll

AUDIO: There is a re-verb in your sound. Also, the nat sound is missing right after each of your sound bites.

EDITING: See above.

OVERALL: Please fix the re-verb in sound, re-edit to tighten up the script and images, re-record your voice-over and re-submit. This was a wonderful story that we would like to see re-submitted if possible. Thanks.

School: Killingly High School
Town: Killingly
Slug: "Project Search"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :55

DELIVERY: The voice-over and stand-up are very fast, this with the sound problem makes it very hard to understand. Please relax during your stand-up. Try to smile through your voice-over and stand-up, this will help keep the speed even throughout and add energy.

INTERVIEWS: good

ORIGINALITY: good

WRITING: good

VIDEO: good

AUDIO: there is bad sound on your voice-over – it re-verbs.

EDITING: good

OVERALL: Please re-record your voice-over and re-submit. This is a well done piece and we would like to see it re-submitted if possible. Thanks.

INTERVIEWS: Don't let your interview (sound bites) tell the entire story. Choose just the most important portion of the soundbite then write into and out of the soundbite. Both your interviews are of the same tone. How about an interview with someone who is attending the ceremony or one of the dance performers? Also, try not to let your interview submit hold the mic.

ORIGINALITY: Nice community story.

WRITING: The Fox 61 Student News stories are aired throughout the year and need to be written as evergreen pieces. Please don't refer to "this evening" , your need to give it a date.

VIDEO: More b-roll is needed. Close-ups from the dance ceremony and images of the audience watching the ceremony and their reaction. The reaction of an audience lets the viewer know what they can expect to feel if they too attended the event.

AUDIO: This needs to be consistent throughout the piece. Also, this story would have been a great place to get nat sound ie. Music, dance steps, etc.

EDITING:

OVERALL: this is a nice community story. Unfortunately we don't have the capability of fixing your sound in-house. Please re-mix your sound levels to be consistent throughout. The sound bites are very low compared to the voice-over.
