Hartford Academy Of The Arts
Date Posted: October 10, 2005
School: Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts
Town: Hartford
Slug: "The Benefits of Tai Chi"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :49:06
DELIVERY: Very good. Excellent pace and tone. Very clear and easy to understand.
INTERVIEWS: Great choices and good sound bites.
ORIGINALITY: Interesting topic.
WRITING: Good job. Nice job covering all the questions. Great introductions and information about Tai Chi. Remember not to state opinions as facts. In your stand up you say Tai Chi helps improve grades. You could either say "many students say Tai Chi has improved their focus" or "some believe" or if there are facts to support the statement you could say something like, "All the students who participated in Tai Chi this semester increased their overall GPA by a quarter of a point" or something that mentions a hard fact. You need to be careful not to state something as fact if it is not proven.
VIDEO: Lots of great shots. Great footage of the students practicing Tai Chi. The story is too dark at many points. Remember shooting inside a place like that you will need a light.
AUDIO: Good. Consistent levels throughout.
EDITING: Great job! You used a variety of shots and they matched very well with the audio.
OVERALL: Very nice job overall. Please re-do stand up so that we can put this on the air. As written it seems like the reporter is putting his own opinion into the story but it needs to stay objective.

Evaluations for 2002-2003
Date:7/10/03
School: Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts
Town: Hartford
Slug: Bullying in School
Status: Re-submit
Length: :50
DELIVERY (How is the voice used to tell the story [pitch, tone, diction]): Good delivery and stand-up.
INTERVIEWS (Sound bites interesting and did they enhance the story?):An interview should add information to your story. Suggestion: interview with a student who is willing to discuss being bullied. How about the principle to discuss his view of the effect the zero tolerance policy has had in the school.
ORIGINALITY (Story creative, unique, statewide appeal?): Good. This is a timely subject.
WRITING (Report written clearly, creatively, & grammatically correct?): Good job writing into and out of each of your sound bites. With the type of story you are covering you will need to include statistics to back up your premise. You mention there are absences from school from bullying – how many this last year? Try not to generalize in your story.
VIDEO (Pix illustrated the story? Tri-pod used, lighting, composition?): More variation in your b-roll is needed. Remember to get plenty of wide, medium and close-up shots. This will help with the pacing when editing.
AUDIO (Clarity, natural sound, enhance the story?): Good consistent levels.
EDITING(Pictures and sound used in the proper sequence to tell a story? Pictures match the script?): see video.
OVERALL(All the elements used to tell an interesting story for the viewer?): Overall this is a good subject, but you will need to be more specific is your facts for your script. Thanks.

Slug: "Tolerance"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :50
DELIVERY: Good pacing on the voice-over. Be careful in your stand-up, currently the students sitting around you distract from your stand-up. Having individuals in the background due to the content of the story is fine.
INTERVIEWS:
ORIGINALITY: Good premise.
WRITING: Remember a journalist needs to be objective in his reporting. Currently this is an opinion piece without any facts backing it up. When you are first researching your story, ask yourself the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW and build from there. Are there any tolerance classes taught in school or guest speakers addressing the issue?
VIDEO: More b-roll is needed to support your premise.
AUDIO: Good
EDITING: See video. More b-roll and a variation in your shots will make editing easier and help with the pacing of the piece.
