Fairfield High School
Evaluations for 2002-2003

Date:7/10/03
School: Fairfield High School
Town: Fairfield
Slug: "FHS Baseball 2003"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :50

DELIVERY: Voice over and stand-up delivery were good. Suggestion: when doing your ending stand-up place yourself within the action and do the stand-up at the ball field with the game going on behind you. There is a rule of thumb to help: when doing a story about potholes, stand in the pot hole to do the stand-up!

INTERVIEWS: Good first interview. How about a second interview with a player who has benefited from the program. Remember to introduce each interviewee in your script.

ORIGINALITY: When researching the topic of a story, ask yourself "what makes this unique to Connecticut", "What is the 'hook' of the story", "Why would the viewer care?" All important considerations when answering the 5W's and H in your script.

WRITING: Remember to write into and out of each sound bite you use. This will introduce your interviewee and move your story forward. Also, the 5 W's and H need to be answered in each story (WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY, and HOW)

VIDEO: Currently all your images are wide or medium wide angle. Nice job not panning, zooming or tilting with your images, but you need to get a variation in your shots. Remember to shoot plenty of medium and close-ups when on location.

AUDIO: good

EDITING: Good.

OVERALL Due to the extended break between your voice-over and ending stand-up we will not be able to air this story. The viewers will assume the story is over at the end of the voice-over. Please re-due your script to time out at exactly :50 seconds from the moment the voice-over begins to the end of the stand-up, including your sound bites within that :50 seconds. If you are having trouble filling :50 seconds of material with facts then you should re-exam your premise. You might need to pick another angle for your story.

School: Fairfield High School
Town: Fairfield
Slug: "Barlow's Restaurant"
Status: Broadcast
Length: :50

DELIVERY: Nice job on your stand-up. Be careful when recording your delivery that there are no pauses in your voice-over. You will want to record the voice-over several times, just in-case.

INTERVIEWS: Good choices in your interviews and sound bites. Be careful to introduce each interviewee in your script.

ORIGINALITY: Good, interesting story.

WRITING: Good job covering the facts. Remember to write into and out of each sound bite. There are suggestions on page 12 of the "How to Manual" (enclosed)

VIDEO: Good job getting close-ups. Please don't use pans, tilts or zooms in a news story. News is a straight forward story telling technique and the images should reflect this. Get plenty of medium and close-ups to use in editing. This will help with the pacing without making the viewer motion sick.

AUDIO: See delivery for your voice-over track. The sound bites were good.

EDITING: Good

OVERALL: Overall a nice job.

Status: Re-submit
Length: :50

DELIVERY: Good voice-over. Good stand-up. Suggestion: dress for the role of reporter: dress shirt, tie and take the hat off, this will had credibility to your story. Remember the entire state is going to see your news stories.. Also don't look down during your stand-up, always look toward the camera/cameraman. The reporter looking down is disconcerting for the viewer.

INTERVIEWS: Good choices.

ORIGINALITY: Good

WRITING: Good

VIDEO: Good variation in your b-roll. Note: All shots should be steady and use a tri-pod. There are a few dark images and black/white images in your story. When we dub down this one more time to place the Fox 61 and WB 20 wrappers on the dark images will be almost completely black.

AUDIO: Good

EDITING: Good job matching your images to your script.

OVERALL: Overall you did a good job putting your elements together. If you have additional footage you can edit in place of the dark images, please do so. This is very close to air. Thanks.
