Darien High School
April 26, 2008

School: Darien High School
Town: Darien
Slug: Turf
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Excellent. Great tone, pace, energy and inflection. Very professional. Great job on the stand ups. The bridge in the middle was very creative. Nice job dressing up for the story.

INTERVIEWS: Great job seeking out a person of authority to speak on the subject. Nice sound bite.

ORIGINALITY: Timely and newsworthy topic.

WRITING: Very well written. Answered who, what, where, when, why and how of the story.

VIDEO: Excellent. Great camera work. Nice mix of shots and angels. Shots were well composed and thought out. Creative camera work on the bridge stand up.

AUDIO: Good consistant levels.

EDITING: Great job matching up the video and audio. Story flowed very well. Do not use supers on Student News pieces. There is a wrapper with school name and town that goes on each story that covers the lower third and will cut off the super.

OVERALL: Excellent. Next time make sure you have 5 seconds of b roll pad at the beginning and end of the story. It helps us in post-production when we are preparing the story for broadcast in case you are a few frames short on time.

School: Darien High School
Town: Darien
Slug: McCain
Status: Broadcast
Length: 50

DELIVERY: Good job. Nice energy and pace.

INTERVIEWS: Great job getting a sound bite from Lieberman. Good initiative. Nice emotional sound bite. Well selected.

ORIGINALITY: Newsworthy Topic

WRITING: Very well written. You did a good job but as a Student News story there are a couple things to keep in mind. You say last Tuesday, but we air these stories through out the year so it won't make sense to a viewer watching this story in June. Phrase it as "This winter" or "In February" but use something more general so that it can be used more than just the week the appearance happened. Also you mention your schools news club more than once. When it is running on Fox 61 and CW 20 it is running as a Student News story so leave that part out or phrase it as "student reporters from Darien High School". People not from your area will not know what the local news club is.

VIDEO: Well shot and composed. Lighting and color were good. Great job getting to the event and getting the action, the crowd and the bus. Very good shots of McCain speaking and shaking hands. Nice job using an establishing shot for Lieberman.

AUDIO: Good levels. Nice use of natural sound.

EDITING: Story flowed nicely. Nice job matching the video to the script. There were a few points when you cut to black. You should fill that with b roll. Going to black signifies the end of the story and viewers will change the channel. Adding some b roll there will help the transition. Do not use supers on Student News stories. There is a wrapper that has the school name and town that goes around every package and it will cut off the super.

OVERALL: Great story. Well done. Next time keep in mind the special guidelines required for Student News packages to run on broadcast television. Also, you need to have 5 seconds of b roll pad at the beginning and end of the story. It is necessary for us during post-production.

School: Darien High School
Town: Darien
Slug: "Volunteer"
Status: Re-Submit
Length: 46

DELIVERY: Nice job. Clear and easy to understand.

INTERVIEWS: Great sound bites. Nicely framed.

ORIGINALITY: Great topic.

WRITING: Well written. Stayed focused.

VIDEO: Good job getting footage at the assembly and event. Nice shots of speakers and kids at sign up event. Would have been nice to add some tight shots of people signing their names to volunteer or taking brochures.

AUDIO: Good levels.

EDITING: Story flowed well but adding some shots would improve even more.

OVERALL: Great story but it is too short. Needs to be 50 seconds in length to fit our broadcast schedule. If you have one more student sound bite you could add or one more line about the event you would be up to the right length. You also need 5 seconds of b roll pad at the beginning and end of the story so that if you are a few frames short we can use that in post-production to make it fit. Fix the time and resubmit so we can air this good youth leadership story. Also you signed off using your school's news program. You should say Student News since it will be airing on Fox 61 and CW 20.
