CT Junior Republic
Date posted: November 22, 2004
School: CT. Junior Republic
Town: Waterbury
Slug: "Kids Can Cook"
Status: Broadcast
Length: :50

DELIVERY: Slow it down a bit to make the story flow better. Great location for the stand-up.

INTERVIEWS: Good interview. A second interview would have made the story stronger. It would have been nice to hear from on of the students of the program.

ORIGINALITY: Good.

WRITING: Well written. Nice job writing into the interview.

VIDEO: Great shots. Nice close ups of people preparing the food and the final results.

AUDIO: Good levels through out the story.

EDITING: Nice job matching the video to the audio. Great transitions.

OVERALL: Well done. If you add a second interview and slow down a bit it will really make the story stronger. Great b-roll and nice job editing.

2003-2004 Evaluations

Date posted: March 25, 2004
School: CT. Junior Republic
Town: Waterbury
Slug: "Time Expo"
Status: Re-submit
Length: :51

DELIVERY: good voice-over. Nice job putting your ending stand-up on location.

INTERVIEWS: good choice on your first interview. Suggestion: a second interview (sound bite) from a museum visitor IE: what are they enjoying, learning, etc.

ORIGINALITY: Nice story with statewide appeal. We haven't had the student news cover the Time Expo museum so this was refreshing to see.

WRITING: Good job covering your facts (5 W's & H: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How). Please remember to introduce your interviewee (sound bite) within your script. Also remember to have at least one wrap-up line in your ending stand-up, after which you only need to sign off with "From Waterbuy, this is Randy Hall reporting".

VIDEO: Good job getting a variation of images – especially medium and close-up images.

AUDIO: Good consistent levels.

EDITING: Nice job matching images with your script.

OVERALL: We really liked this story, but it has to be :50 seconds in length. We don't have the capabilities of editing a second off your piece so we will have to defer the story back to you. We need this to be exactly :50 seconds from beginning of the voice-over to the end of the stand-up. If we go a second over schedule the advertisers don't like it!

INTERVIEWS: See originality and writing. A second interview from someone who has benefited from one of the programs is needed.

ORIGINALITY: Good overall subject. You will need to decide what your "hook" is for the story. Pick one aspect, program or volunteer of the Junior Republic and focus your story on that.

WRITING: See originality. Currently, this runs too much like an infomercial. Once you have your premise selected, then answer the 5W's and H: WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY and HOW. Always introduce your interview subject within your script, don't let them introduce themselves. See page 12 in the "How To" manual for tips on writing into your sound bites.

VIDEO: You only need one establishing shot of the Building. Then go in for images of the programs and people you are mentioning in your script. Good job getting images of your programs. Be careful to get plenty of images, including numerous medium and close-ups. This will help when you have to edit the story. The general rule of thumb is to get 30 minutes of film shot for a 1 minute story.

AUDIO: Good
