The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights Award is given to the high school students who produce the best news story addressing human rights issues.
News is information that is of interest. Human rights news involves information that concerns each individual's right to be treated fairly. The concepts of justice, equality and freedom from oppression are phrases heard so often they can lose their vitality. The goal of this award is to have high school students explore behavior that will move us closer to making these "concepts" a living reality.
The winner of this award may expose what is unfair. Or, they may awaken the conscience of humanity to the plight of a person facing adversity, affirming that person's humanity. Ultimately, you will produce a news story that puts the viewer inside the skin of your subject. The production quality of the story is also considered.
