May 3, 2007

WATERBURY -- Nearly 400 participants turned out in Library Park on April 29 for the 2nd annual Walk Against Hunger, presented by Webster Bank. With the support of walkers, donors, sponsors and volunteers, $38,772 was raised by the end of the event.

Prior to Walk day, participants gathered monetary pledges from family members, friends, colleagues and others. Proceeds will be used by Connecticut Food Bank to transport, warehouse and distribute donated food to local community agencies such as soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, and adult and child day care centers.

John Carroll of Fox 61 and Bob Sagendorf of WATR served as hosts of the event, while Waterbury Mayor Michael Jarjura added a few words of support to this growing event.

Special guest Ryan Gomes, a Waterbury native and Boston Celtics star, signed autographs for young fans and walked as part of the General Mills/ShopRite team, which won first prize for team fundraising, collecting $2,515.

Other team fundraising prizes were awarded to the Waterbury Baptist Ministries, aka "The Dog Pound," which raised $1,788, and UCONN Waterbury, which raised $1,510.

The Waterbury Alpines, a local youth program, won for best team spirit.

Top individual fundraisers were:
