New Haven Walk Against Hunger Raises $102,000
May 6, 2007
New Haven —
A crowd of nearly 500 people turned out in East Rock Park on May 6 for the 31st annual Walk Against Hunger, presented by Webster Bank. With the support of walkers, donors, sponsors and volunteers, $102,000 was raised by the end of the event.
Prior to Walk day, participants gathered monetary pledges from family members, friends, colleagues and others. Proceeds will be used by Connecticut Food Bank to transport, warehouse and distribute donated food to local community agencies such as soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, and adult and child day care centers.
John Carroll of Fox 61 and Eric LoRusso of WPLR/99.1 served as hosts of the event, while Waterbury Mayor John DeStefano added a few words of support to this New Haven tradition.
Lenora Moore-Turner, of New Haven, raised $3,673 in her eighteenth year participating in the Walk Against Hunger. This was the most money raised by individual, which earned Ms. Moore-Turner the Grand Prize of two roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines.
The other top individual fundraisers were Haley Erskine, 13, of Stamford with $1,618 and Angelo Melisi of Norwalk, $1,580.
Team fundraising prizes were awarded to:
