Fox 61 Family Fund to Receive $15,000 Donation
March 30, 2007
HARTFORD —
Jim Altman, Fox 61 News at Ten Reporter, put his poker skills to the test at the Foxwoods Poker Classic Charity Media Showdown on Wednesday. The cards were in his favor as he beat out fellow media personalities from across the region to win the top prize of $15,000.
"The same qualities that make Jim a good reporter also make him a good poker player. His tenacity combined with his coolness under pressure contribute to his success in the field and in the casino," noted News Director, Bob Rockstroh.
Altman donated his first place prize to the Fox 61 Family Fund, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation. The Fox 61 Family Fund is dedicated to supporting local programs that will have a long-term, positive impact on children and youth and strengthen Connecticut families. Since its inception in 1998 the fund has granted over $6 million to more than 70 worthwhile Connecticut non-profit organizations with a focus on education, child and spousal abuse prevention, and family health.
Elsa Veisor, Community Affairs Manager of Fox 61, is thrilled with the donation, "Because of our partnership with the McCormick Tribune Foundation, they will match 50 cents for every dollar, bumping the donation to $22,500 of which 100% will be invested in the community because Fox 61 and the foundation pay all administrative costs."
The tournament will benefit a number of other charities including $7,000 won by Matt Scott of Newschannel 8 to Dr. Mel's Multiple Myeloma Fund, and $2,500 won by The Day's Scott Ritter to support the Neurodegenerative Disorders in New Haven. Other participants included Brad Drazen of NBC 30 (4th), radio personality Anthony Pepe of Boston's 1510 The Zone (5th), the Associated Press's John Christoffersen (6th), Ryan Gainor representing the Westerly Sun (7th), Ed Dunn of the Norwich Bulletin (8th), the Resident's Will Kerr (9th) and Dan Nowak of the New Haven Register (10th).
